Aber fail to break down Latvians
DESPITE bossing the game for long periods, Aberystwyth were unable to turn their superiority into goals and had to settle for a scoreless draw.
The best chance of the first-half fell to John Lawless after 37 minutes. David Bridgwater’s cross was missed by both Lee Spike’s head and the visiting keeper and fell to the Liverpudlian, but he hit his five yard shot from a narrow angle against the post.
Lawless had opened proceedings with an early shot which whistled just over the bar and a speculative 25-yarder from David Bridgwater fizzed past a Dinaburg post.
Another Lawless effort from a 25-yard free-kick went straight to Sodorovs in the Latvian net and player/boss Gary Finley saw one header from a Lawless corner go over and another from Baker’s cross cleared by the Latvian defence.
Bridgwater had an impressive first-half display while his former TNS colleague, goalkeeper Dean Williams, was a virtual spectator.
The Latvians upped the tempo to force their first corner three minutes after the break and, with Tamaz Pertia pulling the strings in midfield, they posed more of a threat to the Black & Greens’ rearguard.
But keeper Sodorovs had to be alert to snatch a teasing cross by Lawless from Lee Spike’s head before Aber captain Bari Morgan fizzed a shot across the visitors’ goalmouth.
The introduction of Marc Lloyd Williams on the hour mark nearly paid immediate dividends when he cleverly beat Vadims Logins before firing his shot from the edge of the box straight at the visiting keeper.
The striker then mis-kicked from Andy Lee’s through pass before ballooning a Lawless pass high over the bar. Substitute Grygorchuck made an impact when he crossed for Sokolovs to head narrowly over and it took a last ditch tackle by veteran Aneurin Thomas to stop him homing in on goal.
But Aber's defences were rarely threatened by the Latvians, who seemed happy to settle for a draw against their tiring opponents.
