First hurdle failure for Bangor
A WELSH Premier League club has yet to negotiate the first hurdle in the Uefa InterToto Cup after Bangor City tumbled out with a 2-0 second leg defeat in Latvia.
Needing to win by two goals to cancel out last Sun's 2-1 defeat in Rhyl, they again fell behind to an early goal from Deniss Sokolskis, who scored after just five minutes at Belle Vue.
In the 13th minute the Bangor defence failed to cut out a corner and Sokolskis powered a header past goalkeeper Andy Ralph.
Peter Davenport's side resisted some heavy home pressure as Ralph was called on to save from Valushkins, whilst a fine shot from Zizilevs was deflected just past the far post.
Bangor's best effort of the first-half came when Lee Atherton's awkwardly swirling cross was well held by Dinaburg keeper Fjodorovs, but the home side almost had the last word in added time when Kriklivy's chip fell tantalisingly on the top of the Bangor net.
Travelling fans were upset by some of Armenian referee Ararat Tchagharyan's decisions, but they were given hope soon after the restart when Owain Tudor Jones hit a post with a long range shot as Bangor upped the tempo.
Tony Gray then chipped just wide after being put through, but it was to prove a false dawn as Dinaburg effectively put the tie beyond City's reach when Lee Atherton headed the ball into his own goal on 56 minutes, leaving the Welsh side on the wrong end of a 4-1 aggregate scoreline.
