Morris denies Robins in shoot-out drama
Afan Lido v NewtownAFAN Lido claimed the League Cup for the third time in their history with a penalty shoot-out win over Newtown at Aberystwyth's Park Avenue.
Keeper Craig Morris was Lido's hero, saving spot kicks from Kieran Mills-Evans, Nicky Rushton and Shane Sutton to take the cup back to the Marston's Stadium.
The Aberavon outfit had come close to winning the game inside normal time after a deft side-footed pass from Danny Thomas had set-up Mark Jones to fire them in front after 42 minutes.
Lido had the best of the first-half with Jones sending another shot just wide of the post and Carl Payne also wide from the edge of the box from another excellent Thomas delivery to Leon Jeanne.
After the break, Carl Evans sent an overhead kick just over the bar for the Seasiders, but Rushton responded for the Robins with a shot that went just over the angle.
Anthony Finselbach was inches wide with a 15-yarder as Lido looked to seal the game in normal time and then provided the pass for Alex Rickett whose effort was cleared off the line by Andy Jones.
Some resolute defending had denied the Robins many clear-cut openings but, in the second minute of stoppage time, Sutton's shot was blocked by a defender and Rushton drove home the rebound to set-up an additional 30 minutes.
Finselbach twice came close to restoring Lido's lead in the first period of extra time.
He had keeper Nick Thomas scrambling across his line for a volley which went agonisingly wide and then saw his drive hit the top of the crossbar.
But Newtown found their second wind in the final stanza, Sutton heading over from a free-kick and Rushton lobbing Morris only to find the top of the net.
Callum Wright held his head in his hands as he fired a good chance inches over with almost the last kick of the game, and the miss proved costly as Andy Dyer's men edged home in a tense shoot-out.
