Saints go nap in curtain-raiser
TNS v PrestatynTHE champions began the defence of their title with an impressive display of finishing at Park Hall, but the other contenders will take heart from the fact that Prestatyn breached the home defence on two occasions.
The hosts made the breakthrough after just five minutes when Christian Seargeant passed inside from the left to Chris Sharp, whose 18-yard shot went in off the near post.
Keeper Jon Dunt produced a good save to keep out a stinging shot from Barry Hogan before TNS increased their lead in the 12th minute when Seargeant's deep cross from the left caught Jack Lewis napping and Craig Jones stole in to head home at the back stick.
But the Seasiders produced an immediate response with Lee Hunt finding the target with a spectacular overhead kick after the home defence had failed to clear their lines.
The two-goal cushion was restored midway through the half when another good delivery from Seargeant allowed Sharp to head the third.
Sharp went close to another after the break with a fierce strike from 20 yards which flashed just wide but the Saints increased their advantage on the hour, Scott Ruscoe finding Danny Holmes who hit a superb left-footed 20-yarder into the top corner.
Jones went close to a fifth before Prestatyn hit back again, Hunt sending a glancing header past Paul Harrison from a Ross Stephens set-piece.
Hayes almost added another with a header that flew over the bar, but TNS had the last word when Sharp completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot after a surging run by Danny Holmes had been ended by a Hayes foul tackle.
And only a tremendous diving save from Dunt prevented sub Alex Darlington making it six in injury time after more good work from Sharp.
