Reds complete a double
LLANELLI completed a Welsh Premier League and League Cup double with a comfortable 2-0 win over Rhyl.
The Reds seized on some defensive lapses to score first-half goals from Andrew Mumford and Chris Holloway and, although Rhyl raised their game in the second-half, keeper Duncan Roberts kept them at bay.
Llanelli manager Peter Nicholas was without leading scorer Rhys Griffiths, who pulled out on the morning of the match, plus defender Wyn Thomas and midfielder Craig Jones.
But, although the Lillies created chances, the champions took theirs to lift the trophy for the first time.
Llanelli took the lead after 15 minutes when an Andy Legg throw found Mumford, who sent his half-volley past keeper Lee Kendall via the inside of a post.
Rhyl skipper George Horan missed a golden chance to level just a few minutes later when he headed over from a couple of yards but the Reds doubled their lead on 40 minutes when Chris Holloway beat his marker to score with a glancing header from Gary Lloyd's corner.
It took a superb one-handed save from Roberts to keep out a Craig Jones volley and Horan headed over from six yards.
Roberts dived low to push out Lee Hunt's close-range effort and it was Reds' skipper Lee Phillips who lifted the trophy.
