FORMER Wrexham and Shrewsbury Town defender Neil Ashton has signed for Cefn Druids.

The 32-year-old Liverpool-born player started his career with Tranmere Rovers as a youth, turning professional in 2003, but made just one senior appearance during his time at Prenton Park and was loaned to Shrewsbury. The move was made permanent by manager Gary Peters and Ashton went on to make more than 130 appearances in all competitions before a loan move to Macclesfield Town.

In the summer of 2009, Ashton signed for Chester City who had recently been relegated to the Conference Premier but found himself without a club when the Blues were expelled in February 2010.

Ashton joined Wrexham on trial and signed ahead of the 2010/11 campaign, becoming a regular and playing in both legs of the defeats to Luton Town in the Conference Play-off semi-finals.

Over the next few seasons, Ashton made 204 appearances before being released by Wrexham in May 2015 and signing for Barrow, joining Southport last season.
