THE New Saints retained the Word Cup with a 2-0 victory over Denbigh Town at Llandudno's Maesdu Park.

But the Huws Gray Alliance underdogs gave a great account of themselves after qualifying for the competition as wildcards and defeating Welsh Premier opposition in Rhyl, Airbus and Connah's Quay on the way to the final.

It took the WPL champions 25 minutes to break Denbigh's resistance when a cross from Chris Marriott was headed in by Matty Williams against his hometown club.

Chris Seargeant came close to a second on 52 minutes with a 25-yard shot that fizzed past an upright but the lead was extended soon afterwards when Mike Wilde converted from an Adrian Cieslewicz cross.

Elliott Power made a good save to deny Aeron Edwards and Denbigh almost pulled a goal back when Paul Hart's lob caught TNS keeper Paul Harrison off his line but went over the bar.
