FORMER TNS defender Danny Holmes has joined Newport County in League Two.

Birkenhead-born Holmes, 26, is new manager Terry Butcher's fifth signing ahead of the 2015/16 season and said on Twitter he is "excited" by the move.

Holmes, whose brothers Tommy and Jamie also both played in the Welsh Premier, came through the Tranmere Rovers' youth system.

Having captained the youth and reserve sides, he signed as a professional shortly before the 2007/8 season but spent the latter half of the campaign on-loan at Conference North side Southport, making 18 appearances in all competitions.

At the end of the season, having made one league appearance during a 1–0 defeat to Yeovil Town, Holmes was one of five players released by Tranmere.

He signed for TNS and made 57 WPL appearances, scoring three goals, before returning to Prenton Park.

He went on to secure a regular berth and made 157 appearances before the club's relegation to the Conference.
