TNS played with far more confidence than in Manchester, and could easily have taken a first half lead. Chris Taylor wasted a golden chance to open the scoring when he could only head weakly wide after Nicky Weaver had flapped at a cross.
Then, Martin Naylor fired in a powerful low shot that deflected off Richard Dunne and hit the post with Weaver stranded.
For the rest of the time, Saints were content to get bodies behind the ball and they were rarely troubled seriously. Darren Huckerby, who was a constant threat all evening, got through after 15 minutes but Dean Williams saved bravely at his feet.
Eyal Berkovic's free kick on 35 minutes grazed the side netting with Williams beaten.
But the back four held firm and Simon Davies, Jamie Wood and Scott Ruscoe were able to weave some pretty patterns further forward, without breaching City's defence.
It looked as though Saints would get to the break on level terms, but when Chris King mis-hit a clearance it left Negouai with a simple chance to open the Blues' account.
The second half saw TNS in even more adventurous mood, with Brabin in particular an inspirational figure. With 10 minutes left, the captain spotted Weaver off his line and aimed a cheeky 50 yard lob under the City bar, which the keeper was glad to claw away.
Then Brabin latched on to a cross from the right to power in a terrific 20 yard header which was scrambled off the line by the City defence.
From the clearance, Willi Flood got away down the right flank and outpaced the TNS defence to lay on the simplest of chances for Huckerby, a fate Saints didn't deserve for all their hard work.
