Darlington gives Saints a late advantage
TNS v NewtownA LATE goal from Alex Darlington ensured The New Saints will take a slender lead to Latham Park in the second leg of the League Cup semi-final.
But they were left to rue a string of missed chances and some sloppy defensive errors after surrendering a comfortable 2-0 half-time lead.
Chris Seargeant fired TNS in front in the 18th-minute from Simon Spender's right-wing cross and only a superb save from Newtown keeper Nick Thomas kept out a stinging shot from Chris Williams after good work by Sam Finley.
Keiran Mills-Evans forced keeper Alex Ramsay into a save at the other end but Darlington added the second goal on the stroke of half-time, heading home from Marcus Giglio's left-wing delivery.
Seargeant hit the post early in the second half but the Robins levelled with two goals inside three minutes.
Nick Rushton intercepted a stray Giglio back-pass for the easiest of chances before Gareth Partridge dinked the ball over his marker to slot home the equaliser.
In a purple patch for the visitors, Matty Cook hit the crossbar and Callum Wright forced a good save from Alex Ramsay.
Sub Charlie Proctor drew another good save from Thomas in the visitors' goal before, in the last minute of normal time, Darlington produced a fine individual goal, lobbing the stranded keeper from the edge of the box.
