THE New Saints reached the second qualifying round of the Champions League, but they needed extra-time as they struggled to overcome nine-man Europa FC in Faro's Estadio Algarve.

After an evenly-contested opening period, TNS took the lead on 37 minutes when Ivan Moya could only turn a Ryan Brobbell free-kick into his own net. And, four minutes later, Scott Quigley handed his side the lead on aggregate when he turned-in an Aeron Edwards pass.

But Europa levelled the tie again soon after the break when Edwards was penalised for handball and Liam Walker netted from the penalty spot.

The Gibraltarians then self-destructed on the hour mark when Kiki Gomez was sent-off for a stamp on Ryan Pryce and Alex Quillo followed him down the tunnel for dissent.

But TNS struggled to penetrate the home defence until, in the 104th-minute, Quigley curled a shot into the net to seal a 4-3 aggregate win and set-up a meeting with HNK Rijeka of Croatia.
