| Hayes goal stuns league leaders TNS |
| Friday 05 February 2010 |
A MIKE Hayes goal gave Gap Connah's Quay a shock 1-0 home win over Welsh Premier leaders The New Saints on Friday night. Hayes seized on a slip by Welsh international centre-back Steve Evans and rounded Phil Baker to home in on goal and fire the only goal of the game past keeper Paul Harrison via the inside of the far post on 69 minutes. TNS thought they had taken the lead on the quarter hour when keeper Terry McCormick could only palm Chris Seargeant's 20-yarder shot into his own net, but an assistant referee mysteriously ruled that Craig Jones, who followed up the effort, was offside and the goal was disallowed. And it could have been worse for the visitors when Harrison produced a diving save to keep out an Aaron Burns shot. It was the Nomads' first home win over the Saints for 16 years, and Port Talbot also ended a hoodoo by beating Haverfordwest County at the GenQuip Stadium for the first time in six attempts, Martin Rose scoring the game's only goal when he headed home from a corner on 63 minutes.
