Ambitious Bridgend in stadium move
Monday 18 May 2009
AMBITIOUS Welsh League outfit Bridgend Town will move out of their temporary home at Treforest to play at the Brewery Field next season.
Along with Bridgend Ravens RFC, the football club purchased the lease to the ground from Celtic Crusaders Rugby League backer Leighton Samuel in March.
Bridgend received £2 million for the sale of their former Coychurch Road home which was vacated in 2006 to make way for a new supermarket and have since played at Porthcawl and the University of Glamorgan's Tyn-y-Wern playing fields.
Initially, Bridgend said they would not play at the Brewery Field, but there has now been a change of heart, although they are still backing plans for a £40m sporting village at Island Farm, in partnership with the Crusaders and the Ravens.
The 12,000-capacity Brewery Field should meet FAW domestic club licencing requirements if Bridgend can mount a serious promotion bid next season.
The club reached the semi-finals of the Welsh Cup this season before a 2-1 defeat at the hands of eventual winners Bangor City.
