Reed in search of American dream

Jamie ReedJAMIE Reed is hoping to follow in the footsteps of a fellow Hawarden High School pupil who has taken the Scottish Premier League by storm - the much sought-after St Mirren defender Andy Dorman.
Former Wrexham striker Reed has left Rhyl to try and secure a place with a team in Major League Soccer in the USA.
It is a route that Dorman took - and the midfielder is reaping the rewards. Like Reed, 27-year-old Dorman attended the same school that unearthed England goalscoring legend Michael Owen and the man who has played more Premier League games than anyone else, former Wales captain Gary Speed.
Chester-born Dorman moved to America to attend Boston University and in 2004 went on to play for New England Revolution where he earned rave reviews.
Unable to reach agreement on a contract extension, Dorman signed for St Mirren and made his debut for the SPL outfit in January 2008. His performances earned a contract extension and have caught the eye of a number of clubs including Rangers, Sheffield United and Bolton Wanderers.
With his reputation continually growing, Dorman has continued to impress and this year was voted SPL player of the month for both February and April.
And 21-year-old Reed, who opted against signing a new contract at Welsh Premier champions Rhyl in an attempt to live his American dream, is hoping his move will lead to bigger and better things, just like it has for Dorman.
"Hopefully I can make a name for myself like Andy has," says Reed.
"Andy never had a club over here, went to America on a football scholarship when he left school and joined New England.
"There are now supposed to be lots of Premiership clubs interested in him - he has done really well. Hopefully I can follow in his footsteps.
"You can only see what happens but I am aiming really high. I am just hoping to do well there. I have never had any problem scoring goals at any level I have played so hopefully I can prove my worth."
Reed, who will fly out to the States later this week, added: "I have not got a contract. I've got an agent who will help me sort out some trials and see what he can do.
"I will go out there, train with a few clubs and hopefully get a deal."
Reed's former Wrexham team-mate Gareth Evans has already taken his first steps to forging a successful career across the water by joining Austin Aztex and Reed says: "I was offered another contract at Rhyl but I wanted to have a go in America.
"Gaz likes living in America and enjoys playing there. It is a different type of football altogether and a few people have gone out there."
Reed scored 13 goals from 22 league starts and nine sub appearances at Belle Vue and feels he could have had more.
"I played on either of the wings for most of the season, but playing out wide added more to my game. It was a decision the manager made and I did not mind.
"I would prefer to play as a striker, I would have got a few more goals, but being versatile adds more to your CV."
